Leslie A. Morgan, PhD, is Professor,Department of Sociology andAnthropology, at
the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She is a Fellow of the Gerontological
Society of America and the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. Her current
research focuses on assisted living, economic status of the elderly, and dementia

J. KevinEckert, PhD, is Professor, Department of Sociology andAnthropology, at theUniversity
of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is Director of the Center for Aging Studies and
Co-Director of the Gerontology PhD Program. His research focuses on alternative systems
for providing family care and long-term care alternatives, especially assisted living.
Ann L. Gruber-Baldini, PhD, isAssistant Professor, Division of Gerontology, Department
of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, University of Maryland School of
Medicine. Her research interests are in gerontology, cognitive functioning, the impact
of chronic conditions on functioning, and issues related to health outcomes of nursing
home and assisted living residents with dementia.

Sheryl Zimmerman, PhD, is Associate Professor of Social Work and Public Health
and Co-Director and Senior Research Fellow of the Program on Aging, Disability and
Long-Term Care, Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research spans many topics related to the quality of
care and quality of life and death for elders across all types of long-term care settings.
